September – Happy Birthday!

Earlier this year, the Floridian party-rapper Dominique Young Unique dropped her Glamorous Touch mixtape, and now she’s back with another one. Stupid Pretty is just eight songs and about 20 minutes, but its tempo pretty much never lets up. One song gives a house-music makeover to Waka Flocka Flame’s “O Let’s Do It” beat, and another seems to interpolate Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” riff via cheesed-out Euro-trance synths. Annie Clark, better known to most of us as St. Vincent, has composed a piece called “Proven Badlands” for the orchestral ensemble yMusic. The track is as playful and prettily fierce as anything you’d expect from Clark. It’ll appear on yMusic’s new album Beautiful Mechanical, but you can download it below.

For whatever reason, Rihanna recruited British dance-music goofball Calvin Harris to produce “We Found Love,” her new single, which means it’s a finely polished, absolutely cheesed-out rave banger. The track cranks the house theatrics of “Only Girl (In The World)” way past 11, and its vintage early-’90s organ-bloops and passionately meaningless chorus are enough to make the Crystal Waters fan in me misty. I like it! Listen below.

As a Baltimore native, I appreciate it when anybody can display local pride while, at the same time, admitting that their hometown is a total shithole. Detroit rapper DopeHead does that beautifully in his elegant black-and-white video for the track “Airbags.” He also bashes Drake and Wiz Khalifa claims to be high enough that he can “piss on your planet.” Danny Brown and a J Dilla LP cover make cameos, and Storymode directs. This is a very good rap video. Watch it below.

Last year, Zola Jesus released two absolutely bewitching EPs, Stridulum and Valusia, both of which moved away from the scraping noise of her origins to a dark, swirling synthpop that made amazing use of Nika Roza Danilova’s operatic howl. Those EPs pointed toward great things, and now Zola has finally given us Conatus, the album that delivers on their promise. We’ve already posted the early tracks “Vessel,” “Avalanche,” and “Seekir,” and now the entire album, which sounds heavy as fuck on first listen, is streaming at The Guardian, where you …

The summer slate of festivals can surely get a little overwhelming, as year after year, more and more events are added to an already-saturated calendar. That growth, given the fact that most of these concert events are totally cleaning up from a bottom line perspective, probably won’t change in 2012 (although lingering issues associated with last year’s spate of stage collapses may escalate insurance or other associated costs). But, as the pileup of summer is now in the rear-view mirror, autumn offers its share of enticing festivals, and there’s a …
